Hoan Kiem lake is situated in the heart of Hanoi that is in the middle of bustling Old Quarter and former French architecture city. Old name of Hoan Kiem is Luc Thuy or Green water lake because the water was green all year round.

 According to Legend, Le Loi Emperor once was boating on the Lake when he saw a golden turtle arising on water and asked for returning the sword he borrow from Dragon King to vanquish foreign aggressors. After the event Le Loi Emperor change the name of the Lake into Hoan Kiem or Returning The sword.

Hoan Kiem is named for the Oldest district in Hanoi center. By the weekend, all vehicles are not allow to drive inside this area and part of old city so that you feel nice to walk and explore the daily life and shopping here.
